As wicked issues and culture change increasingly dominate the headlines, the importance of leadership is becoming ever more evident. Leaders, both political and managerial, are being challenged to deal with recalcitrant problems in new ways: framing enquiries rather than presenting expert solutions.
Total Place operates within a context where the relationship between local and central government is contested and evolving. The engagement of elected members in the process, always important to the success of any work involving local government, will become even more critical in the run-up to a general election and the growing visibility of polticians and politics in a place.
The leadership section of this website aims to provide a platform for leaders involved in all aspects of Total Place to share their thoughts and experiences of the work.

The reason I was keen for Bradford to participate in the Total Place pilot programme was because it offered the chance to pursue some ideas that had been emerging in discussions with colleagues and partners in Bradford over recent months. It was an opportunity to step back and look at the organisations from a customer view point – end to end. And embark on a new philosophy of people and place; before institution.

Total Place is an ambitious programme, with challenging timescales. It’s no surprise that as a sub-region we felt this was just the kind of challenge we could rise to. Within the sub-region we are well versed in partnership working and enthusiastic about what can be achieved through collective energy. Leaders in a place should think more creatively about how to innovate and learn together; Total Place is key to driving this.

Total Place is a huge opportunity for public services across the sub-region of Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire to better understand where they can make an impact by working collectively. It is my expectation that by doing this we’ll be able to drive out significant waste and duplication. At the same time, it will enable us to develop solutions to issues that are common to us all, in ways that make sense locally rather than imposing models from the centre.

In Lewisham we have looked for overlaps between services rather than gaps – only if we can achieve saving through eliminating overlaps will we be able to afford to start plugging the gaps. We are a borough where the strategic level partnerships work well and there is good front line co-operation but the progress towards organisational integration has been dreadfully slow.
